Nick Ashford was an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor. He was best known as one half of the husband-and-wife songwriting and production team Ashford & Simpson, with his wife Valerie Simpson. Nick Ashford was born on May 4, 1941, in Fairfield, South Carolina. He was the son of a minister and grew up singing in church. He attended the University of Michigan, where he studied music and theater. In 1964, Ashford met Valerie Simpson, and the two began writing and producing songs together. They wrote hits for artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross. In 1973, they released their first album as a duo, Gimme Something Real. In addition to his work with Ashford & Simpson, Ashford also wrote and produced songs for other artists, including Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and Whitney Houston. He also acted in films and television shows, including The Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Nick Ashford died on August 22, 2011, at the age of 70. He was survived by his wife, Valerie Simpson, and their two children.
